Growing out of overconnection: The process of dis/connecting among Norwegian and Portuguese teenagers

Young people struggle with permanent online connection that is associated their generation. This article looks at teenagers’ affective relationship to connectivity and disconnectivity, how it socioculturally influenced by the media, family, peers. It reports on an interview study 36 teenagers between 15 19 years of age from Norway Portugal. Our findings evidenced disconnection may arise out a latent feeling “disaffect” generated in experience ambience connected platform culture as well media; or unavailability created spend leisure time, which families’ moral economies. Teenagers have perform labor managing different, sometimes contradictory, forces converge connectivity. Managing digital appears individual—but socially produced—moral obligation self-govern, unequal conditions.
